The most notable whiffs came during the April signing period, when Michigan lost out on five-star guard Josh Christopher (Arizona State) and five-star forward Isaiah Todd (NBA G League) in a 12-hour span. Few schools have been able to recruit consistently at that level - Duke and Kentucky are the exceptions - and Howard himself had plenty of strikeouts. For a time, he seemed to exclusively recruit five-star prospects - or at least top-50 recruits. When he took the job in May 2019, Howard sent out a flurry of scholarship offers to the nation's top prospects. It began on March 14, 1991, and ended with the championship game on April 1 in Indianapolis, Indiana. Recruiting does not guarantee on-court success. The 1991 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament involved 64 schools playing in single-elimination play to determine the national champion of men's NCAA Division I college basketball. And this year, he signed the top class in the nation, despite the challenges of not being able to make in-person visits and evaluations during the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2019, he signed the top class in the Big Ten, less than five months after taking the job and despite having no recruiting experience. Howard has done it in just under 15 months, despite circumstances that could've hindered his recruiting.
